Sinking the Penna Winze at Laronde Extension Project
- Laronde Mine: Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd.
- Commodity: Gold (Au)
- Awarded in October 2007, Dumas began the Penna Winze Project to sink an 820 meter circular concrete winze, starting at 2,060 meters below surface.
- Working in close partnership with the client, Agnico-Eagle Mines, Dumas employed a precise logistical plan to carry our contracting activities in parallel to the mines operations.
- The Winze Project was conducted by sinking a five stage Galloway, assembled entirely underground, with the use of three one-boom shaft jumbos and a Cryderman hydraulic clam shovel fixed to the bottom of the Galloway.
- Concurrent to the winze project, was the excavation of three stations and its respective forty meters of lateral development. In addition, Dumas engaged the construction, installation and commissioning of the underground hoist and hoist room, ventilation system, electrical stations, loading pockets, dumping chutes and all shaft and station hardware.
- Dumas utilized innovation and an open contractor-client approach to tackle the larger challenges at depths and deliver on technically challenging projects like the Penna Winze.
Ore Production at Casa Berardi
- Casa Berardi Mine: Aurizon Mines Ltd.
- Commodity: Gold (Au)
- Onsite since June 2005, Dumas perpetuates a close working relationship with the client – Aurizon Mines to maximize the mine’s profitability.
- Initially, an 820 meter circular concrete shaft (5.5 meters diameter), driven with pluggers, was sunk and completed in 2006. The scope of the shaft sinking project included the excavation and construction of shaft stations and the installation of all mechanical and electrical hardware.
- In conjunction with the completion of the shaft sinking, Dumas has been excavating approximately 9,000 meters per year of ramp, level development and drawpoints, all mine construction, rehabilitation and ground support. Dumas’ underground mine development services were extended to include both the development and operation of the mine. Ore production mining is carried out in large stopes and in numerous Alimak, timber and conventional raises to supply the 1,800 tons per day milling facility.
- The remoteness of this Northern Quebec mine presents challenges due to the distance of equipment, material and workforce. With the ability to respond to these situations, Dumas is capable of relocating equipment quickly, exercise sound scheduling and maintain a stable workforce with innovative recruiting and training programs.
Turnkey Ramp Project at Perseverance Mine
- Perseverance Mine: Xstrata Zinc
- Commodity: Zinc (Zn)
- Dumas is proud to have contributed to the focal project in the Mattagami Mining Camp of Quebec, by excavating and developing all the underground access for Xstrata at the Perseverance Project.
- In October 2006, we began our turnkey contract with the portal construction in the harsh weather of Northern Quebec. The underground work scope included excavating 10,000 meters of ramp and associated level development, developing numerous raises of various sizes for production, ventilation and safety exits, and two construction crews to provide miscellaneous and support work. Our qualified workforce also provided the installation and commissioning of the mine’s ventilation systems including the installation of anchor wire, piping and ground support.
- The major challenge of the project was the short time frame and deadline to bring the mine to production. Dumas responded as usual. Unsurpassed logistical planning, workforce expertise and industry leading health and safety regimes allowed Dumas to satisfy our contractual obligations and allow the mine to enter the production phase five months ahead of schedule.
Underground Construction Solutions at Hoyle Pond Mine
- Porcupine Gold Mines: Goldcorp Inc.
- Commodity: Gold (Au)
- For over a decade, Dumas has been the sole mining contractor to provide the Hoyle Pond property with underground engineering, ramp development, raises, construction and mine services
- Beginning in 1998, a small workforce provided development and rehabilitation work. The excavation of 6,000 meters of ramp (4.0 m x 4.5 m) and level development, 2,000 meters of track drift, 600 meters of narrow vein drifts and a series of timber and open raises were accomplished yearly. Our safe, efficient and productive performance resulted in Dumas winning a major winze project at the Hoyle Pond Mine.
- In March 2004, Dumas provided consulting and engineering services for the shaft design used to construct the winze. Two months later we began the winze project by excavating an internal 4.3 m by 2.1 m rectangular shaft from the 1,180 meter level up to the 655 meter level with a mechanized raise climber. The scope of the winze project included:
- Ramp and drift excavation on multiple levels to access the winze;
- The excavation of electrical substations, underground hoist room, rope drift, sump, loading pockets, main service bay access, fuel bays and cross-cuts;
- The installation and commissioning of the hoist, shaft furnishings, service bay crane and ventilation systems; and
- The construction of refuge stations, chutes, grizzlies and rock breakers.
- Today, Dumas is driving the ramp (4.8 m x 4.5m) from the 560m level to the 1330 m level and continues to provide a full slate of innovative underground mine contracting services, to ensure that our customer receives exceptional value for each project.
Full Scale Development at Kidd Mine
- Kidd Mine: Xstrata plc
- Commodity: Copper (Cu)
- Our commitment to the highest standards of health and safety practices and the ability to achieve goals on schedule and within budget has resulted in Dumas maintaining a long-standing relationship with the Kidd mine operational team.
- Ongoing since February 2002, Dumas has been excavating 5,000 meters per year of multiple lateral development headings, and over 1,000 meters per year of raise work. The highly talented Dumas construction crews have accomplished many refuge stations, bin rehabilitation, manways and miscellaneous construction work at the bottom of the mine.
- Currently at 9,000 feet (2,740 meters) below ground, Dumas works 24/7 to drive one of the deepest ramps in the world. Six raise crews also work around the clock to excavate raises of six meters in diameter by “pilot and slash” method, using long hole drills.
- Extreme heat and humidity at the bottom of Mine D creates a challenging working environment for any workforce. Dumas continues to overcome these challenges by strict health and safety regimes and practices which have led to 1,000,000 man-hours (three years) with no lost time since 2006.
Shaft Sinking at Timmins Gold Project
- Timmins Gold Project: Lake Shore Gold Corporation
- Commodity: Gold (Au)
- Dumas has an integrated role in building Timmins newest gold mine.
- From the concept and design stage of the project in 2007 to the development phases, we are the mining contractor of choice excavating a concrete lined exploration shaft to a depth of 710 meters. The scope of work also included engineering and construction of the shaft collar, headframe and hoist infrastructure.
- Currently at the 650 meter level, we are excavating the forth shaft station and lateral development drift to a 30,000 ton bulk sample zone. Since the shaft sinking began in 2008, a remarkable average sinking rate of 10.8 feet (3.3 meters) per day has been achieved.
- Our innovative approach has prevailed in all aspects of the Timmins Gold mine shaft sinking project. The use of the Dumas designed Cryderman Tower (shown in the above picture) permitted to use the Cryderman to excavate the collar, allowing our six deck galloway to be lowered into the opening before the surrounding infrastructure was built. In addition, Dumas is one of the very few worldwide contractors to use a six deck galloway with two one-boom jumbo drills. This allows for efficient and productive working methods while maintaining the highest safety standards.
