Well, here we go again! It’s the start of another six-year cycle, which is typically four years where the mining industry “booms” followed by a two year “bust” where commodity prices decline, and underground mining contractors feel the brunt of the cost reductions.
I’ve seen it many times before in my career. Between me, my dad and his dad, and now my daughters, we have all experienced the good and not so good in Canada’s hard rock underground mines.
This is my second time around with Dumas, before as Chief Operating Officer and now as CEO since late 2017.
Why did I come back? It’s a simple answer, really. It’s the “Dumas Difference.”

We invest in succession planning and developing our technical/engineering staff and nurture our site personnel to become leaders in operational excellence; we plan and invest so that we’re proactive and not reactive to the cyclical nature of the mining industry. We collaborate with our clients to develop systems and methodologies that eliminate problems before they occur.
We’ve embarked on investing in the coolest tools, state-of-the-art equipment and people that like to have fun (in an industry that often forget the benefits of having fun). Our people are our greatest asset. They demonstrate loyalty, tenacity, and courage time and time again and they are not afraid to speak up or stand up and suggest alternative ways of doing something. Safety is our license to operate and we give it the respect and attention it deserves!
